HURIYA 

DOCUMENTARY FILM

This is a non-commercial project by tattoo enthusiast Stas Gromov, aiming to explore and share with the world how the tattoo scene in Egypt operates, lives, and grows under its own set of rules despite tattoos still being officially banned by the state.

 

The film takes the form of a series of interviews with key players in the process, including local tattoo artists and individuals from Egyptian society who are closely aligned with the spirit of the movement. The creators have delicately attempted to lift the veil on Egypt’s underground tattoo scene, observing how the inevitability of progress and the growth of social media are driving shifts in public consciousness. They also explore how the “closed” nature of the local tattoo community impacts its growth and future.

 

In Egypt, the secular and religious aspects of the national doctrine are in constant fluctuation, the issue of women’s rights remains pressing, and the local population tired of revolutions and changes in power desires just a bit more freedom for self-expression than the government currently allows.
